The power of a 3D body scan in everybody’s pocket!

A revolution for retailers and custom clothing manufacturers

November 26, 2021

One of the big problems in the fashion industry is the waste it produces. In environmental and financial terms, this is a disaster. One of the causes of this waste is the huge returns rate of purchases. Customers, looking at an item online, cannot be sure it will fit them. After all, humans come in an infinite range of shapes and sizes. Creating garments that fit well means that customers are much happier with their purchase, far less likely to return it, and more likely to come back for more.

At TG3D Studio, we’ve got stuck into this problem. We have a range of solutions, including our in-store scanners, which are brilliant because they scan five million points of the body in a contact-free way. This creates an accurate image of each individual shopper.

But what if a customer prefers not to go into a shop to get measured, or a business doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar site?

Introducing the 3D mobile scan app

We started to think about what we could do to make it easy for online businesses to access the same kind of information about customers’ sizing. Suddenly we realized we already had the technology to do this right in our hands!

We have been able to harness the depth sensing capabilities of iPhone’s Face ID technology, usually used to unlock your phone, to scan the whole body. This 3D body scan  is done completely securely. The customer is now able to complete body scanning in their own home, very easily and comfortably, at a time that’s convenient for them. The instructions are simple and intuitive.

What are the benefits?

Both systems benefit custom clothing design and ready to wear retailers in several ways.

Very accurate customer measurement data from a body scan like this can be mapped to your clothing measurement data, so retailers can confidently give excellent size recommendations to the customer, resulting in far lower return rates. Using this data from customers can enable retailers to go back and look at their standard fit, revamping it to ensure that future blocks will fit their customers far better. This again increases retention and reduces returns.

For custom clothing manufacturers and vendors, the benefits of detailed measurements are obvious. The more precise the measurements and the more of them there are, the better the garment will fit. And the fact that the customer gathers them themselves means you do not have to employ extra staff to do this essential job for you.  Also, this saves customers from having to schedule multiple fitting sessions and the long lead-time to receive the final product.

The mobile app increases the geographical reach of the company. It means that customers in other regions or countries can scan themselves and use the fitting recommendations. You don’t have to restrict yourself to local clients and can offer a worldwide service, with just as great feedback as if you’d hand-measured every patron yourself and spent hours in the fitting room.
