Hot Topics from This Month’s 3D Tech Festival

· News,Insights

MOTIF’s 3D TECH FESTIVAL successfully ended on September 17 with over 4,534 registered, 1,470 attendees, and many hours of live broadcast. TG3D Studio is glad to be part of Motif’s 3D community along with the eight other world-class 3D Fashion software companies who were festival sponsors and all the amazing designers who participated. Rick Yu, our CMO and Co-Founder, gave an insightful presentation on “Post-COVID: Starting your own label by harnessing 3D tech.” Rick dove into the major challenges in the traditional creative production process, and shared the success stories of some of the early 3D adopters. He also provided useful suggestions and solutions for brands with all kinds of challenges in his speech. Listen to the full presentation at https://go.tg3ds.com/rickspeech_3DTF.

For those who couldn’t attend the MOTIF 3D Tech Festival, we have gathered all the key insights and discussions regarding TG3D Studio here on our blog this month. If you would like to learn more about the topics, you may visit our virtual booth at https://motif.org/booth/3dtf-tg3d-studio/. Also, feel free to comment or share your ideas in our virtual booth. The virtual booth and community rooms will be open for six more months and we would love to hear your voice!

3D Tech Festival Community Rooms — Q&A

Question: How does tg3d software compare to other 3D software for the fashion industry? What are the advantages?

Our Answer: Every 3D software program has its own strengths and weaknesses. Rather than the “best” solution, we think designers should look for the one that is most suitable for achieving their personal digitalization objectives.

At TG3D Studio, we don’t think of the other 3D solution vendors as our competitors, since our goal is to offer a holistic, fully integrated, and yet open platform. Here’s what we mean by that.

“Fully integrated”: If you don’t want to get bogged down in the technicalities of integrating various solutions, we can offer you a package in which every piece is fully integrated with the others. You can devote more of your time and energy to creating beautiful clothing offerings and running your business. If you are looking for a one-stop shop, we are confident that we can provide best-in-class service.

“Open”: For example, if you are already using other solutions and just need digital avatars and materials, you can consider our body scanner, LiveAvatar, and Nuno3D services. We’re happy to chat anytime about how our offerings can plug into the array of services that you’re already using.

Question: I would like to know more about technologies or companies connecting 3D with on-demand manufacturing of clothing. Will this allow democratization of the fashion industry and allow small designers to start their collections as well as make the industry more sustainable?

Our Answer: Our basic thesis here at TG3D Studio is that yes, 3D design technologies absolutely have the potential to “democratize the fashion industry and allow small designers to start their collections as well as make the industry more sustainable,” as you put it.

At the end of Rick’s presentation (starting at 15:20 in the recording), Rick talks specifically about how independent designers can use 3D technology to enable a shift to an on-demand production model.

Question: What is the fastest and most accurate tool for creating a digital library of materials such as fabrics and accessories?

Our Answer: TG3D Studio’s Scanatic™ Nuno Fabric Scanner and associated Scanatic™ Nuno3D Service make it easy to scan your fabrics. The scanner quickly creates brilliant digital fabrics that look very true-to-life. Here’s a video guide. And here’s a video that shows how the brand QORE uses the scanner in their design process.

In addition to your existing fabrics, you might want to use our 3D Apparel Collection, which includes pre-made 3D garments, trims, and fabrics; the collection is available as part of our Scanatic™ StyleBook Service.

As for accessories: our Scanatic™ DC Suite software makes it easy. You can take photographs of your buttons, button holes, or stitches, upload those photos to DC Suite, and then “paste” your photographed accessory right onto your digital garment. And we are working on developing a stock collection of 3D digital accessories for designers to use in DC Suite—stay tuned!

Question: Do you have to have a Scanatic™ DC Suite license to be able to use the fabric NunoScan app? What file format does the Fabric Scanner generate?

Our Answer: The NunoScan App requires the Scanatic™ Nuno3D Service license. The Nuno3D Service can output color, normal, specular and also PBR compatible formats such as roughness, metalness and ambient-occlusion maps all in .png formats.

Question: Will you be coming out with an Android version of the NunoScan App? I would love to digitize my fabrics with the ease of my phone but I have a Galaxy s20 5G, not iphone.

Our Answer: At TG3D Studio, we care a lot about making sure that your fabric scans look brilliant, every time. We’ve found that the iPhone X and SE2 have the most stable optical settings for image capturing. Since phones that run on Android vary widely in terms of camera quality, we aren’t able to support them at this time.

Question: Does anyone out there have the technology to go from a body scan to an avatar that can be moved into a new pose, say doing a yoga position, and then this used to work out a perfect fit of a sports garment?

Our Answer: TG3D Studio’s Scanatic™ Body + 3DMeasure Service allows you to upload your own obj from body scan (must meet the tech spec) to the cloud. Then use the Scanatic™ LiveAvatar Service to convert it automatically into a clean (with no webbing under arm and crotch) and articulated (rigged) avatar in FBX that you can use in any mainstream 3D software.

Question: What tools are required for SMEs to use 3D? Does the training come with the apps? What is the cost of a 3D app?

Our Answer: If you’re just getting started with 3D, you might want to prioritize offerings that work with the technology that you already have. For example, our Scanatic™ DC Suite software has pretty basic system requirements (click here). And yes, all of our apps come with training materials included.

Question: Do you have preference to different 3D programs?

Our Answer: When funds are limited, we of course have to prioritize which tech solutions are most critical for our creative work and which are lower-value. Ideally, you’ll be able to find a company that will let you purchase just the services that you really need.

At TG3D Studio, we offer a holistic, fully integrated, and yet open platform. This means that you can subscribe only to those services that will deliver the most value to you. (For an overview of what we offer, see Rick’s presentation here, starting at 19:07.)

Our services are compatible with most other 3D software solutions, so if you’re already using 3D software, we’re happy to chat anytime about how our offerings can plug into what you have. For example, if you just need digital avatars and materials, you can consider our body scanner, LiveAvatar, and Nuno3D services.

Question: Can each client when he/she goes there turn the image individually on a spinning table, from where to choose different color choices? (example configurator on Web page)

Our Answer: TG3D Studio supports this functionality as part of our Cloudzet™ Store Web Plug-in. You can test it out on this page; try experimenting with various fabric and trim options, then spinning the virtual garments around!
